Tesla has selected two showroom sites in India, Reuters reported while quoting anonymous sources. These include a space in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex and a leased area in Delhi’s Aerocity, both near their respective airports. The automaker had restarted its lookout for retail outlets here in 2024, after putting market entry plans on hold in 2022.

A Tesla plant may come up in Chakan, Maharashtra, ET reported
Elon Musk meets PM Modi
The newswire went on to state that these showrooms will be about 5,000 square feet in size. Notably, the latest developments follow PM Narendra Modi’s meeting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk last week in the United States. Just this week, Tesla has advertised 14 roles including store and customer relationship managers.
Autocar India could not ascertain the opening dates of these showrooms. “[Tesla plans] to sell imported EVs in India…these deals are for showrooms, not service centres,” one of the Reuters sources said, adding that the EV company will run these outlets.

Maharashtra may become a manufacturing hub for Tesla in India, according to an Economic Times report. Tesla has an office in Pune along with multiple suppliers, and the state government has offered it sites in Chakan and Chikhali (both are close to Pune), the newspaper stated citing sources. It should be noted that major car brands like Tata, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen already have production facilities in Chakan.
